I have been writing and talking about the SMM Generation for a while now and those who have read me from the start certainly have no problems knowing where this is coming from. However, for the benefit of those who have joined us along the way, I will go back a little bit to talk about the basis of the SMM Generation.
I will try to shed some light by bringing you examples of SMM before revisiting the concept of ‘’Complete Freedom of Choice’’ and their ultimate objective: Self-Realization.
Which public figure can represent best the SMM Generation?
Searching for SMMs we could definitely look at people such as Obama in politics, Gene Simmons in the entertainment business or Tom Brady in sports. But instead, I will present you what I believe to be today’s SMM strongest presence on the public scene: Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta. Which, I am sure, you know her best as Lady Gaga.
Topping the entertainment sector of TIMES 100 Most influential personalities of 2010, Lady Gaga certainly possess most of the SMM attributes and represents it in great fashion.
Today’s queen of pop’s message is, in general, a simplification of what my book says:
1- Refuse the world’s order 2- Believe in yourself 3- Become what you want
When she talks about ‘’her people’’ (her fans) she describes them as her ‘’Little Monsters’’ and why not? Our Generation is certainly different enough to be called a Monster. And important enough to be as scary as one for the Old Guard!
But Lady Gaga was never meant to become as popular as she is today. She is not your typical Hollywood artist pretending to be different. No, she just is. A real rebel; one that Hollywood would have loved to see dissapeared. Why else would they refuse her the awards she deserved? After all, she is the most viewed (videos) on the WWW and the most sold in terms of album! Hollywood is part of the Old Guard. They pretend to want to change things but it is just more of the same, disguised as new. And with someone like Lady Gaga, you don’t get more of the same…
Now, if all that is not enough to determine her as a part of the SMM Generation, another fact definitely is: She calls herself a ‘’Free Bitch’’. The essence itself of the SMM Generation: Freedom. But the truth is, everything in her is SMM like: Her constant exercise of her Complete Freedom of Choice, her raised finger towards the Old Guard who are trying to keep her down and her obsession towards complete self-realization. These are all basis elements of the SMM Generation, one that no doubt includes the likes of Lady Gaga.
Complete Freedom of Choice
The concept of Complete Freedom of Choice stands alone at the basis of the SMM Generation. It states that only an individual can refuse him(her)self anything. No one else has that right. And if an individual does refuse him(her)self what he/she desires, he commits a crime against him(her)self because he therefore refuses to use his/her CF of C. How can you hop that life and others around you treat you well if you can’t even treat yourself well?
One’s happiness has to be the most important objective of one’s life. To get to it, nothing should stand in our way. Keeping in mind that, all along, we need to respect other’s Complete Freedom of Choice.
There is no time or space for self-pity. Those who dwell on it are dangerous to others because they eat up all their time and energy by asking for constant attention. When we give ourselves the right to choose, pity is not an available option: Not for ourselves and not for others.
We all have our role to play. That role is defined by our desires and our qualities. By using our right to Complete Freedom of Choice, we will always end up wining. A success that will take on many different faces as we go through life and may even, at times, seem to oppose what previously was. This, however, is only part of an individual’s evolution because what is true today will not necessarily be true tomorrow.
To not fully realize one’s self when we know the existence of this all powerful weapon which is Complete Freedom of Choice is a crime. For the individual him(her)self of course but also against society as it deprives it from the energy and the beauty of one of its own. This is a sad event that we still see happening too often.
Self-Realization
By now you’ve understood that the ultimate objective of any SMM is to use their Complete Freedom of Choice in order to complete their Self-Realization. However, too many people still confuse self-realization with the ancient cultural idea that was given to us by our forefathers.
It is sad that we still see people believing that their Self-realization will only come through accumulating money, building a family, buying a house and going to work on a daily basis.
What a shame when you see a father showing his deception to his child because he/she still hasn’t found a ‘’real’’ job yet (one that father would be proud of) or the fact that he1she has not yet gave birth to offspring. We still have a hard time to get rid of the cultural image created in US 50’s where success is synonym of being married, having kids, a dog a house and a well paying job. Now that is a rather small box to fit in!
Now that is not Self-Realization.
Self-Realization comes to us through an insatiable thirst for knowledge, discoveries, learning and various creations. It changes itself to adapt as our body and our mind changes. It questions tomorrow what we believed to be absolute truths today. It uses our loss as wells of power and energy that will lead us to future victories.
Self-Realization is a need to always be happy. It’s to be able to say to the world: I do what I want, with whomever I want to and whenever I want to. It is as simple as refusing to have a bad evening, no matter what happens. It is refusing to be bored and to fight with others. It is always finding that crack, the one that will lead us to a better place, right here/right now.
Self-Realization is a state of mind that does not lead you to think that there will be better days ahead because everyday is always a great day.
I hope you now better understand what differentiates the SMM Generation to the previous ones. I mostly hope that it will have given you the desire to be a part of it and to have as many SMM as possible in your life. Because at work or at home, there should be no more space for those that don’t see the full potential and beauty of life.
